Top WarrantHero trader takes positions over Hang Seng and China
Silversurfer entered his first trade on 12 August – the date the WarrantHero game started – with a buy order for HSI call warrant HSI 21600 MB ECW130927 (SP0W), where the underlying Hang Seng futures made a jump more than 350 points or 1.5%, within half an hour.
The spike in the Hang Seng was similar to that seen in the China A50 futures on the same day, where Silversurfer also took a bullish position via FTSECHINAA50 7800 MBECW131030 (S3PW). He exited from both positions the next day with a 58.9% on his HSI warrant, and 30% on his China A50 trade. This compares with the 3.7% gain on the HSI futures and 2.8% increase in the China A50 futures over the same period.
Still bullish on China, Silversurfer re-entered with the same China A50 call warrant on Wednesday. His view this time round however, was wrong and he quickly cut out of this trade with a 19% loss when the futures fell 1.4%.
Runner up focuses on Japan index
First runner-up KELVIN CHUI also focused on an index warrant – the Nikkei. He was bearish and bought both the shorter-dated Nikkei put NIKKEI225 13500 MB EPW130913 (S9XW) as well as longer-dated NIKKEI225 12500 MB EPW131213 (ST1W). S9XW and ST1W made him 22.1% and 22.6% respectively. The Nikkei futures fell 2.2% over the same period of time.
Open position in HSI puts Hwee in third place
Second runner-up HWEE traded both a mix of stock and index warrants. In single stocks, he made a 1.5% return in DBS call warrant DBS MB ECW131101 (SB5W) versus DBS’ 0.7% gain over the same period.
Most of his gains however, came from an open position in HSI call warrant HSI 25600 MB ECW131230 (RQ5W). He bought the warrant at $0.021 on Monday morning, which gave him a 28.6% unrealised profit based on the warrant’s closing bid price of $0.027 on Friday.
